Was macht das Barometer im Galaxy Nexus?

Die größte Verwunderung, als in dieser Woche das Samsung Galaxy Nexus vorgestellt wurde, rief ein kleines Detail hervor: Das neue Google-Phone hat ein Barometer eingebaut, womit der Luftdruck gemessen wird. Werden Android-Handys nun zur Wetterstation?

Das Galaxy Nexus soll das erste Smartphone mit einem Barometer sein, in diesem Fall handelt es sich um den Bosch BMP180. Es ist aber nicht das erste Gerät, bereits das Android-Tablet Motorola Xoom kann den Luftdruck messen.

Der Android-Entwickler Dan Morrill nannte über Google+ nun den Grund dafür: Das Barometer beschleunigt die Standortbestimmung über GPS. Das wurde ihm mitgeteilt, er selbst arbeitet anscheinend nicht selbst zu diesem Thema.

Höhenbestimmung

Bekanntlich braucht es Sichtkontakt zu den Satelliten und einige Minuten Zeit, bis ein Gerät den aktuellen Standort über GPS bestimmt hat. A-GPS (assisted GPS) berechnet zusätzliche Faktoren ein, um sich schneller zu verorten – zumindest annäherungsweise.

Dabei hilft im Samsung Galaxy Nexus nun auch das Barometer. Über den Luftdruck wird offenbar die Höhe bestimmt, auf der man sich befindet. Ob dabei nur zwischen Flachland und Hochgebirge unterschieden werden kann oder auch zwischen erstem und fünften Stock, ist nicht bekannt.
