Das iPhone hat eine Besonderheit: Wenn man ein neues Programm aufruft, dann läuft das zuvor genutzte im Hintergrund nicht weiter, sondern wird geschlossen. Internet-Radio und Instant Messaging sind deshalb auf dem iPhone nicht komfortabel nutzbar.

Als Scott Forstall gestern die neue Firmware iPhone 3.0 für das Apple-Handy vorstellte, erklärte er, warum das so ist und auch so bleiben wird. Hintergrund-Prozesse entziehen dem Akku einfach zu viel Energie.

Ein Programm statt alle

Apples Lösung für dieses Problem heißt Push Notification. Das iPhone hält Kontakt mit einem Server, der die Aufgabe übernimmt, die auf dem iPhone so viel Energie kosten würde.

Der Server hält Kontakt mit den einzelnen Diensten im Internet und meldet sich erst beim iPhone, wenn eine neue Nachricht vorliegt. Diese wird dann auf das Gerät gepusht.

Wenn man also über ICQ oder Jabber von einem Freund angesprochen wird, erscheint auf dem iPhone ein kleiner Hinweis. Jetzt kann man das Programm öffnen, antworten und das Progamm wieder schließen.

Der Server als Flaschenhals

Das ist der gleiche Ansatz, den Apple auch im letzten Sommer präsentiert hat. Funktioniert hat er aber nicht. Daher wurde die Funktion Push Notification komplett überarbeitet.

Dass alle Nachrichten über einen Server geleitet werden, ist natürlich auch ein Problem. Fällt dieser aus, dann verlieren gleich alle Programme, die diesen nutzen, Kontakt.

Auf die Frage, ob eine Verfügbarkeit garantiert werde, antwortete Apple mit einem schlichten Nein.
