Google und Motorola unterstützen Gnome

Eigentlich handelt es sich bloß um eine Formalie: Google und Motorola sind dem Beirat der Gnome Foundation beigetreten. Große Kompetenzen hat dieses Gremium nicht. Dennoch soll durch diesen Schritt die Entwicklung von Gnome Mobile unterstützt werden.

Unter Federführung der Stiftung wird Gnome entwickelt, eine freie und einfach zu handhabende Desktop-Oberfläche für Linux, die bei Ubuntu eingesetzt wird. Die Gnome Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE) soll Gnome auch auf mobile Geräte von einfachen Handys bis hin zu Tablets bringen.

Gnome Mobile steckt bereits in vielen Mobilgeräten, die auf Linux basieren - darunter Maemo, die Access Linux Platform, die LiMo-Referenz-Plattform, Ubuntu Mobile, Moblin und Poky.

Auch Google und Motorola nutzen bereits Teile von Gnome. Das Google-Betriebssystem Android sowie Motorolas Linux-Handys, die auf LiMo basieren, nutzen für die grafische Darstellung GTK+.
